Preko / History

Preko, as well as other places in this island, have many cultural and historical monuments. Only 3 km from the village of Preko there is the Fort of Saint Michael, from which you can have a magnificent view to more than 200 islands of Zadar archipelago and National Park of Kornati.

Only 80 m from village there is an idillical island of Galevac (Školjić) covered with rich mediterranean vegetation that hides a very valuable franciscan monastery of Saint Paul the Hermit from the 15th century.

In the monastery there is a permanent exhibition of books written in glagolic letters (paleocroatian).
In the eastern part of Preko, near the ferry-boat port, there is a romanic church of Saint John from 11th century.

In the village of Ugljan there are monuments from the late antiquity, villa rustica, late antiquity mausoleum, ruins of an early cristian basilic and a monumental oil manufacture from 1 th century in the cove Muline.

Franciscan monastery of Saint Hieronimus from 1430 is situated by the sea in a pine forest. Bishop Šimun Kožičić Benja is buried in the cloister

The restaured renaissance castle of Califi, called also Brčić, is a valuable part of monumental heritage of this village.

In the village of Sutomišćica there is a baroque villa of a famous Lantana family from the 17th century.

LUKORAN in this village there is a villa of the family De Ponte where the famous poet Petar Preradović wrote the well-known song "Zora puca".

POLJANA in this village there is a romanic church of Saint Peter from the 13th century. Many wells with constant springs, as well as many hours of sunshine per year are the reason why vegetables grow in summer as well as in winter.

OŠLJAK in this island there are ruins of an old wind-mill.

SUTOMIŠĆICA situated in a big protected coveoffers a safe anchorage-ground to sailors. There are many well-cultivated gardens in here.
